Tim Yeo speaks at APPG on Nuclear Energy
Our Chairman spoke at a meeting of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Nuclear last week. Tim said it was very hard to see how carbon emissions reduction targets could be met without a big contribution from nuclear but in the short term cost was a major issue. He felt that the UK and other European countries all faced similar challenges and that we were lucky in the UK to have a strong regulator and broad public and political support for new nuclear.
Tim was optimistic that costs could be driven down without compromising safety. He thought that First Of A Kind plant tended to be more expensive. Experienced overseas operators with tried and tested technology from their home countries offering good value for money should therefore also be considered, even though wider geo-political considerations would come into play.
