NNWE roundtable in South Africa: report launched on economics of nuclear energy

Trusted Sources’ report on nuclear energy in South Africa, launched today at NNWE’s roundtable in Johannesburg, finds that:

  • Nuclear works out cheaper than coal-fired generation of electricity when applying the IEA’s LCOE formula (average lifetime cost of generating electricity using different fuels over the life of the corresponding technologies)
  • South Africa’s planned nuclear energy development would reduce carbon emissions by 21 per cent compared to the business-as-usual baseline
  • Going ahead with the planned NPP new build programme could also boost the South African economy by around US$77 billion, close to one quarter of the country’s current GDP
