NNWE celebrates its parliamentary launch
I was delighted to attend NNWE’s very successful parliamentary reception yesterday afternoon.
We had a great range of attendees from across the nuclear industry including representatives from small and large companies, local authorities, academia and several Embassies. I was delighted at the warm welcome all those present gave to NNWE and its aims.
Minister of State for Energy Matt Hancock made an extremely encouraging speech and answered several questions very positively. He confirmed in unequivocal terms the Government’s commitment to a new fleet of nuclear power stations and emphasised the important role nuclear power plays in strengthening the UK’s energy security and cutting its greenhouse gas emissions. His words about the essential contribution which nuclear power plays in enabling Britain meet its emission reduction targets were particularly pleasing.
We must ensure that UK supply chain companies and the skills sector capitalise fully from a nuclear revival. I look forward to discussing how we can best drive forward progress with NNWE members over the coming months.
The excellent atmosphere at yesterday’s event has set me thinking about whether NNWE should now arrange a similar reception in the northwest, close to the heartbeat of much of the nuclear industry.
